Artist's Description
Dinosaurs get all the glory, but it was the mammals who survived the K-T event and burrowed and scurried their way to world domination.
At John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, forty million years of mammalian history is embedded in the soil. The region has been revealing it's secrets since the 1860s, when soldiers discovered the first fossils while guarding wagons of gold destined for ships on the Columbia River.
Remains of creatures of every size are found at John Day Fossil Beds, from tiny rodents to ancient horses and elephants. Among them are the fossil remains of the vegetation they lived among. As the soil eroded away, colorful striations were exposed at the Painted Hills, showing scientists how the climate changed over time.
About Darin Volpe
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
