Description
Five tunnels were blasted through the rock surrounding Boulder Canyon in 1931 to build a railroad connecting Boulder City, Nevada, with the site of the future Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. The railroad provided a means to deliver equipment and construction materials to the dam site. It was last used in 1961, when the last generator was transported and installed in the powerhouse.
Today the rails are gone, but the tunnels remain and the old track bed makes up the 3.4-mile Historic Railroad Hiking Trail which connects the Lake Mead Visitor Center near Highway 93 with the Hoover Dam Visitor Center at the dam site.
