Description
Crossing the Stenner Creek Trestle out of San Luis Obispo marks the start of the climb over Cuesta Grade.
By 1889 the railroad had reached south to the town of Santa Margarita, and the next phase would be to cross the Santa Lucia Range and into San Luis Obispo. After tunnels were blasted and track laid along the Cuesta Grade, the last barrier was the crossing at Stenner Creek. The bridge was built in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and shipped to the work site for assembly, The first train crossed the 950-foot bridge and into San Luis Obispo in 1894.
This consist of four Cotton Belt and Southern Pacific locomotives has just departed San Luis Obispo pulling an inter-modal train on its way north to cross the Cuesta Grade. Freight trains crossing the Stenner Creek Bridge were a common sight in the 1990s, Today, freight traffic goes up the Central Valley, and the only trains you'll see on this bridge are Amtrak and an occasional work train.
