Description
Utah became the 45th state on January 4, 1896. With statehood came the need for a new capitol building, but it took a full ten years for the legislature to approve a commission for overseeing its design and construction. Funding was a problem, but in 1911 Union Pacific Railroad Tycoon E.H. Harriman passed away and left his wife a big enough inheritance that the taxes on it amounted to nearly $800,000. With the unexpected windfall, another $1 million in bonds were approved and the project moved forward. The new building was finally finished in 1916, twenty years after Utah became a state.
