Artist's Description
This black-tailed deer was photographed in the Bumpass Hell region of Lassen Volcanic National Park. The East Tehama deer herd of Columbian black-tailed deer occupies parts of this Park in the summer. It is the largest herd of Columbian black-tailed deer in California. They migrate nearly 100 miles, moving from lower elevations in the winter to higher elevations in the summer.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is located in Northern California. Established in 1916, the same year that the National Park Service was created, it was the fifteenth national park and is one of the oldest national parks in the United States. It is best known for it's hydrothermal features such as fumaroles (steam vents,) boiling mudpots, and steaming ground. The Bumpass Hell area is the largest hydrothermal area in the park, covering sixteen acres and including each of these features.
