Description
An old wagon wheel in the ghost town of Bodie, California.
Bodie is a ghost town near California's border with Nevada, about 75 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe. In addition to being a California Historic Park, it is also both a California and National Historic Landmark. It began as a mining camp following the discovery of gold in 1859. It remained an isolated mining camp until 1876, when the Standard Company discovered a deposit of gold ore. That transformed it from a small mining camp to a Wild West boomtown. In 1880 the town was transformed into a family-oriented community, and by 1910 the population was down to less than 700 people. The last mine closed in 1942 due to the second World War.
