Description
As tourists enjoy the ride on one of San Francisco's famous cable cars, below the street steel cables pull them along as they climb and descends the city's hilly topography.
Those cables all come together at the historic Washington/Mason cable car barn in Nob Hill, where people can watch the General Electric motors turn the wheels that pull the cables under the city streets. The car barn is the only remaining powerhouse in San Francisco, running all five surviving cable car routes in the city.
Iron wheels spin at about 3 times per second in the cable car barn. Once leaving their respective wheel, the cables make its way under the city, pulling cable cars along at 9.5mph. Visitors to the Cable Car Museum can watch these wheels spin as they explore historic artifacts and, of course, find a souvenir in the gift shop.
