Description
It's relatively quiet on the marsh, just some distant bird calls and the occasionally honking of the geese. Then, for some reason only the geese know, the entire flock takes to the air.
The sky fills with thousands of geese. Their wings beat the air with a thunderous roar as the entire flock arcs over your head, and for a moment you can't see the sky above. Then, as abruptly as it started, they all settle back down, covering the marsh with a blanket of white.
Thousands of Ross's Geese, snow geese, white fronted geese, and Canadian geese spend their winter at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge. From October through March, these birds cover the marsh in a white blanket.
