Description
Cars and trains share the road at over 210,000 grade crossings in the United States.
Until the mid 1990s, street-level railroad crossings were the number one source of injuries and fatalities in the railroad industry. After the turn of the century, those injuries and deaths were reduced by nearly forty percent, but that still means that every three hours a person or vehicle is hit by a train.
In 2022, more than $570 million was approved by Congress to help eliminate grade crossings, either by rerouting traffic of through over- or underpasses, but it's unlikely that out-of-the-way places with limited traffic like this crossing in Caliente will ever see a bridge.
