Description
Three locomotives pull a BNSF freight train up the steep grade between Bakersfield and Tehachapi. On this line, another set of engines usually pushes from the rear, and sometimes another set is even helping along mid-train.
The most modern road locomotives like these General Electric ES44C4s produce 4,400 horsepower, which less than the big steam locomotives of the 1940's. The Union Pacific "Big Boy" of 1941 was capable of producing the pulling power of 6,500 horses. But when lashed up and working in unison, a set of 3 ES44C4s on the point of a train can generate more than 13,000 horsepower, and with mid-train and trailing units can reach 35,000 horsepower or more.
