Artist's Description
A great place to grow bananas? Today, the only greenery you'll find in the high desert of Oregon belongs to farms. Thirty million years or so ago, things were different..
Dig into the red bands of soil and you'll find fossilized remains of those bananas, along with figs, palms, and other vegetation that you'd expect to find in modern day Central America. But only dig if you're a paleontologist, otherwise you'll just find yourself a hefty fine because this part of Central Oregon is the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
The Painted Hills has been protected land since the 1930s when the State of Oregon began buying the land to create state parks. It, and three other state parks, became the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in 1975.
About Darin Volpe

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
