Artist's Description
For two millennia, artists have used the surface of Newspaper Rock to inscribe their petroglyphs. This is the work of multiple artists from multiple time periods, from the large central figure and the bear tracks and animals that are layered on top of each other, all the way to the "Virgina H." and "1944" scratched near the large crack.
Newspaper Rock State Historic Park is located in southeastern Utah and is one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs in the world. Petroglyphs are created by carving into a rock surface, as opposed to petrographs which are drawn or painted on a rock face.
These etchings in the sandstone record approximately 2,000 years of human activity, including the Ancient Pueblo, Archaic, Basketmaker, and Fremont cultures. It also includes inscriptions from modern Americans with some pieces dated from the first half of the 20th century.
