Description
I stumbled upon this house while walking about Newport, Rhode Island, near the marina. It was built in 1802 and has obviously seen some remodeling since then.
Newport is located on Aquidneck Island, the largest island on Narragansett Bay. The town was founded in 1639 when the island it is on was called Rhode Island. During the 16- and 1700s Newport was a major center of piracy, and it was the center of the slave trade in New England during the American Colonial period, importing molasses and sugar from the Caribbean to be distilled into rum, which was then shipped to West Africa and exchanged for slaves. Beginning in the 19th century Newport became known as as a summer resort where wealthy southerners began building cottages and by the 20th century many of the country's wealthiest families were spending their summers there. Today Newport is known for having one of the largest concentrations of colonial homes in America.
