Artist's Description
The Klondike Highway passes through the Coast Mountains as it connects Skagway, Alaska, with Dawson City in Canada's Yukon Territory roughly along the route prospectors used in the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush.
Gold was discovered in in Yukon Territory in August of 1896, and by 1897 the Klondike Goldrush had begun. Thousands of hopeful goldseekers boarded ships on the west coast of the United States heading north to Skagway and Dyea, Alaska. Once there they had to acquire enough supplies to last a year, the Canadian government's requirement to cross the border in order to prevent mass starvation in the remote The distance across the mountains from Skagway and Dyea to the lakes where the supplies could be loaded onto boats for the rest of the journey was only about 35 miles, but moving the ton of supplies required many back-and-forth trips from camp to camp. It took an average of three months and hundreds of miles of walking to travel those 35 miles.
