Canoes on the shore of Hume Lake at the Hume Lake Christian Camps.
A canoe is a lightweight narrow boat, typically pointed at both ends with an open top. Historically, canoes were made of bark on a wood frame or simply dug out of a tree. Consturction evolved to canvas on a wood frame, then to more modern materials such as aluminum, plastic, and fiberglass.
Hume Lake is a reservoir located in the Sequoia National Forest in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The 87-acre lake was formed by the construction of the world's first concrete reinforced multiple arch dam in 1908. It was originally used to store logs for an adjacent lumber mill and supplied water for a flume to transport lumber. Logging ended in 1924 after which the lake has used primarily for recreation, primarily swimming, boating, and trout fishing. The lake is currently owned by the U.S. Forest Service.
