This EMD F7A was photographed at the California State Railroad Museum in 1992. Although not obvious from this angle, the F7 is probably America's most recognizable locomotive thanks to Santa Fe's striking red, yellow, and silver "warbonnet" paint scheme and its popularity in model railroad sets from the 40's through today.
The F7 was introduced in 1949 and between then and when the last one rolled out of the EMD shops in 1953 nearly 4,000 were produced. It was by far the most popular diesel of its day, outselling all other manufacturer's locomotives combined, and was the first "common" diesel on the rails. Some were in service all the way into the 1980's, and they still power a few scenic railroads around the United States.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
