Tse' Hone' A Rock That Tells A Story -- Petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument, Utah Framed Print

2,000 years of artwork is etched into the sandstone rock face at Newspaper Rock State Historic Park.

Newspaper Rock State Historic Park is located in southeastern Utah and is one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs in the world. Petroglyphs are created by carving into a rock surface, as opposed to petrographs which are drawn or painted on a rock face.

These etchings in the sandstone record approximately 2,000 years of human activity, including the Ancient Pueblo, Archaic, Basketmaker, and Fremont cultures. It also includes inscriptions from modern Americans with some pieces dated from the first half of the 20th century.

The meaning of the figures is unknown. Is it storytelling, clan symbols, or hunting magic? Or is it simply the doodles or graffiti left behind by bored or tired ancients? Perhaps we will never decipher the true meaning of the symbols.
