A Stroll on the Beach -- Long-Billed Curlew at Morro Strand State Beach, Morro Bay, California Canvas Print

The Long-Billed Curlew is the largest shorebird in North America and a member of the sandpiper family. Long-billed curlews winter in northern Mexico, the Pacific coast of California, some areas of Florida and the Carolinas, and on the Gulf coast of Texas. In the summer they move inland to breed in southern British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan in Canada, eastern Washington and Oregon, and in the western plains through Nevada in the United States.

Eggs are incubated by both females and males, and both will aggressively defend their nests and young. About two to three weeks after the eggs hatch, the female will abandon the brood for the male to care for.
