Rolling off the assembly line at the Republic Aviation factory in 1942, this was one of the first of over 15,000 P-47 Thunderbolts built between 1942 and 1945.
This P-47D served as a trainer in World War II and is the oldest survivor of the P-47 series of fighter planes. After the war it sent to serve in the Bolivian Air Force. It eventually returned home to the United States and was completely restored in the late 1970s.
It currently resides at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. The "Big Stud" paint scheme is not original to this airplane, but represents the plane flown by WWII ace Robert L. Baseler with the 325the Fighter Group.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
