It's a big price to pay, but if you break through a thin crust of soil covering a scalding mudpot and lose your leg, you could have a geothermal feature named after you just like Kendall Bumpass.
Fermaroles hiss with the sound of escaping steam as water beneath Bumpass Hell is boiled by the magma below the surface of the Earth. This is the largest geothermal area in Lassen Volcanic National Park, where you can find not only steam vents, but also mudpots and boiling springs, all surrounded by a sulfur covered landscape.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is in Northern California, and is centered around Lassen Peak at the southern end of the Cascade mountain range. The volcano last erupted in 1915, but geothermal features like this steam vent at Bumpass Hell are reminders that Lassen Peak is merely sleeping...for now.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
