Artist's Description
It was 1955. Ike was President and not-yet-discraced Richard Nixon was vice-president. The world's first commercial nuclear power plant opened in Arco, Idaho, and development began on a new type of weapon, the nuclear tipped ICBM. Ray Kroc opened the first McDonalds, Disneyland's gates opened for the first time, and "Rock Around the Clock" became the first Rock & Roll single to hit number one on the pop charts. Jim Henson created puppet named Kermit. And for $2,065 you could drive home in a brand-new Chevy Bel Air.
The 1955 Bel Air was a big change from the previous model year. It's body was completely redesigned and it was the first Chevy available since 1918 available with a V8 engine. People opting for the Bel Air over the lower models were treated to other bonuses such as as chrome headliner bands and other trim, full wheel covers, and interior carpeting.
