Artist's Description
Even nuclear reactors have their ups and downs. This indicator dial and lights show the reactor operator the status of one of the four control rods that manage the nuclear reaction in EBR-1, the experimental breeder reactor that operated at the first nuclear power plant in the world near Arco, Idaho. The plant didn't generate much electricity, only enough to provide itself with power, but it did prove that it was possible for a nuclear reactor to generate more fuel than it used. It served as a research power plant between 1951 and 1964 and is now a National Historic Site.
