Nesting -- Western Grebe at Santa Margarita Lake, California Metal Print

On the edge of a lake in Santa Margarita, a Western Grebe sits on a floating nest made of aquatic plants. The nests are anchored to underwater vegetation, logs, or roots to keep them in place. This grebe was one of the last remaining on the lake, a straggler in an incredibly late season where birds that were usually gone by June were still nesting in early September.

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive.
