Description
Even long after retirement, this cable and pulley system holds up the rusty boom of an old crane in Alameda, California.
The block and tackle pulley system is thought to have been invented by Archimedes, the Greek inventor, mathematician, physicist, engineer, and astronomer. There is no documented date of the invention, but it is estimated it was invented around 250 B.C. The lifting force is multiplied by the number of times the cable runs though the block.
