"And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea...." - Revelations 13:1
Bristling not with seven heads and ten horns, but instead with MK-48 wire-guided torpedoes, UUM-44 SUBROC nuclear anti-submarine rockets, and UGM-84A/C Harpoon anti-ship missiles, these devils of the deep patrolled the seas from 1967 to 2004.
No longer a beast rising out of the sea, "The Devil Boat" (a nickname derived from it's hull number) is now known as "The Submarine in the Desert” at the Idaho Science Center in Arco, Idaho.
The USS Hawkbill was a Sturgeon class nuclear attack submarine that served from 1971 to 2001. After it's decommissioning, the sail (or conning tower) was donated to a small town in Idaho to live in a community park. Arco is home of the world's first nuclear power plant, is near a major nuclear research laboratory, and is near one of the Navy's most important submarine development facilities.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
