Humingbirds can flick their tongues into a source of nectar as many as twenty times per second. The tongue of the hummingbird is an astonishing device. It is forked and lined with hair-like extensions called lamellae. When the tongue enters a flower or feeder the forks separate, then the two halves come together as the tongue is retracted trapping the nectar within. Researchers are still working to determine how the bird goes about swallowing from the retracted tongue.

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
