Artist's Description
The tiny Anna's Hummingbird seems to be a fragile and dainty creature, but don't let its appearance fool you. Males sometimes engage in violent death matches over territory. This one guards its feeder fiercely, chasing off rivals while allowing females and juveniles to share its precious nectar. Even us humans who keep the bottle full are not immune to his threatening aerobatics as he buzzes just inches over our heads.
Anna's Hummingbirds are found in northwestern Mexico, along the western United States, and along the west coast of Canada. The iridescent red head shines brightly in the sun, but goes dark brown or gray without direct sunlight.
