Description
Elk Grove Campground in Redwood National Park is aptly named. Roosevelt Elk visit the meadow adjacent to the campground regularly.
The story of the Roosevelt elk is one of remarkable success in conservation. Settlers in the Pacific Northwest nearly brought the species to extinction, and the California population of the largest elk species in North America dropped to as few as fifteen individuals. Fortunately for them one of the last herds was located in Prairie Creek State Redwoods State Park, where it was protected.
Prairie Creek State Park is now part of the combined Redwood National and State Parks, a unique combined unit of the National Park Service and California State Parks.
Elk Grove Campground sits just inside the forest at the edge of a meadow. In the same place where Roosevelt Elk population was nearly brought to extinction, these magnificent mammals now regularly roam, delighting visitors to Redwoods National Park.
