The Golden Age of Travel -- Union Station in Los Angeles, California Yoga Mat

The sound of steam hisses in the background as Southern Pacific's Coast Daylight prepares to depart for San Francisco. Last-minute passengers buy their tickets and scramble out the door to board the red and orange train for the ten-hour journey. Soon the whistle blows, the conductor calls "All aboard!", and with the familiar chug-chug-chug the GS-4 locomotive pulls away from the platform.

Built in 1939 and in the heart of Los Angeles, Union Station is considered one of the last great railroad stations built in the United States. The structure combines several architectural styles including Mission Revival, Dutch Colonial Revival, and Streamline Moderne (a classification of Art Deco.) The old ticket counter is now closed, but echoes with the memory of a bustling room full of travelers making their way to destinations around the country.

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
