Description
Water plunging down Roaring River Falls in Kings Canyon National Park violently churns the turquoise pool below into a frothy seafoam green.
The Roaring River is one of several rivers that flow into Kings Canyon, the mile-deep glacier valley that give Kings Canyon National Park its name. Located on the western side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Kings Canyon National Park is a place of extreme elevation changes. Only ten miles separate 14,000-foot mountain peaks from the floor of the canyon almost ten-thousand feet below.
Interestingly, the park's origins were not to protect the peaks and valleys at all, but a strand of Giant Sequoias to the west. General Grant National Park was created in 1890 to protect the second largest tree in the world and surrounding grove. It wasn't until 1940 that the canyon and surrounding wilderness were added to the newly named park.
As the Roaring River approaches its intersection with the South Fork of the Kings River, it cuts through a narrow canyon and drops about forty feet into the pool below. Depending on the season, the pool can be a smooth clear emerald green or, as it was on this July day, a turbulence of frothy waves.
