Artist's Description
Two Sanderlings follow a Marbled Godwit as they all run from an incoming wave at Morro Strand State Beach in Morro Bay, California.
Marbled Godwits, like many other shorebirds, spend much of their time on beaches running away from incoming waves then back out again as the waters recede in search of crabs and other invertebrates to consume. When spring arrives they will leave the coastlines and head to the marshes and flooded plains of Montana, the Dakotas, and Minnesota in the United States and Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in Canada.
