This Sulfur Crested Cockatoo was perched on a tree along highway B81 between Cowra and Yass in New South Wales, Australia. A common bird in the area, it was a rare pleasure to see them flying across open skies and landing in the treetops instead of standing atop an iron cage. I wonder which I would choose - a twenty to forty year life among the treetops or an eighty year parasite and predator free existence as someone's pampered pet.
Sulfur Crested Cockatoos are probably Australia's best known parrot. They are native to the continent's northern and eastern regions all the away south to Tasmania. While they are prized pets in the United States that sell for upwards of $2,000, in Australia they are so abundant that they are often considered pests because of the destruction they cause to fruit and cereal crops as well as wooden structures. Even so, they are a protected species under Australian Commonwealth Law.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
