Description
A Piper Comanche gets caught in the fence after being caught in a gust of wind that caused it to veer off the runway at San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.
The Piper PA-24 Comanche is a low wing, four- or six-seat aircraft. Production started in 1957 and continued until 1972 when the manufacturing facility was flooded in a hurricane. A total of 4,857 were built.
The San Luis Regional Airport McChesney Field is located on the outskirts of San Luis Obispo, California. The airport was established in 1939, but was operated by the federal government until after World War II. Passenger service began in 1946 when Southwest Airways started operating flights there. It was dedicated as McChesney Field in honor of local pilot Leroy E. McChesney in 1987. An air traffic control tower was opened by the Federal Aviation Administration in 1987.
