Description
This Team Baka Honda is an N600 in body only. A custom frame holds a 2.0 liter engine from an S2000 on an expanded wheelbase to meet 24 Hours of Lemons safety standards. With the estimated cost of the modifications blowing way past the LeMons $500 price cap ensuring that it be penalized too many laps to ever win a race, the car is allowed to compete anyways to the delight of the spectators.
The N600 was Honda's first foray into the American automobile market. Powered by an air-cooled 42 horsepower 600cc engine, the diminutive N600 made its American debut in Honda motorcycle shops in 1969 as a 1970 model. 35,000 were sold between their introduction and 1972 and the end of their run when the Civic came on the scene in 1973, and few remain on the road today.
The 24 Hours of LeMons is an endurance race series for cars that are bought and prepped for the track for $500 USD or less. Just about anything with four wheels that was street legal when it was made and passes the safety inspection is welcome. The rules do let you spend more for the wheels, brakes, and required safety gear, but if the judges decide the basic car is worth more than $500 you'll be penalized one lap for each $10 they decide you've gone over. No prior racing experience or training is required - if you've got a driver's license and an old beater, you're ready to race.
