When traveling the Historic Columbia River Highway out of Portland, Oregon, the first waterfall you'll come to is Latourell Falls.
A byproduct of the Pacific Northwest's famous rainy weather are the hundreds of waterfalls scattered around the region. One of the best places to see some of the more spectacular is the old highway between Portland and Ainsworth State Park, where six of the beautiful falls are just a short walk from the road.
Latourell Falls is unique because the 224 foot waterfall is a single drop from the top of the cliff to the rocks below. Hexagonal columns of basalt provide a textured backdrop to the wispy water falling from above.
