Description
Latourell Falls is a 224-foot vertical drop into the Columbia River Gorge, one of 90 waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area was established in 1986 to protect this unique landscape. It's formation began over 15-million years ago, when huge outpouring of lava flooded large parts of what is now Oregon and Washington. Over time lava cooled, was poured over and cooled again many times over, and eventually the land was uplifted and eroded away, exposing the once buried columns. You can find the columnar basalt formations throughout the region.
The Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge is famous for it's waterfalls, and Latourell Falls is the closest to Portland on the Historic Columbia River Highway. This unique waterfall free falls for it's entire height in front of exposed columnar basalt, one of the most outstanding examples of this type of formation in the region.
