Description
Falling 224 feet over the edge of a basalt cliff, Latourell Creek meets the floor of the Columbia River Gorge
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area follows the Columbia River east from Portland, Oregon. The gorge cuts though what was once a pool of molten lava, exposing basalt columns that formed as the lava cooled and the rock split into hexagonal shapes. One of the most interesting places to see these formations is at Latourell Falls. Ferns grow at the rocky base of the waterfall, above which the columns rise as a backdrop to the water and mist.
