Description
The Great American Fish Company has been a landmark restaurant overlooking Morro Bay since 1980. Behind it, the 450-foot stacks of the former PG&E power plant have overlooked the harbor since 1955. While GAFCo, as the restaurant is commonly known, is still thriving, the power plant has been closed since 2014. The town is divided on whether the stacks should stay or go. Some see them, and the associated gray box of a power plant, as an eyesore. Others see them as a landmark just as much as the nearby Morro Rock. Either way, with an estimated cost of $30 million to remove, the stacks are likely to overlook GAFCo and the surrounding waterfront for years to come.
