Description
Until 1991, this pool on the edge of Yellowstone Lake fit it's name. Thick mats of dark green and brown cyanobacteria grew in the pool and made it look black. That changed in 1991, when new vents of hot water appeared and started pouring hotter water into the pool. This increase in temperature killed off the bacteria, leaving the crystal-clear blue water that is seen today.
