Description
Tucked away up a canyon in San Luis Obispo are the ruins of a strange city. This is "Underground House," a structure that looks more at home on the set of Planet of the Apes than in the hills of California. This building was originally underground, the holes on top functioning as skylights.
The Poly Canyon Architectural Design Village started in 1963, when Cal Poly State University's first dean of Architecture and Environmental Design wanted to give students a pace to build experimental structures. There are about twenty structures there with such names as Shell House, Stick Structure, and Modular House. Some are made of concrete, some of wood and metal, all are interesting.
