Description
The Great Church at Mission San Antonio de Padua, in the heart of the Hunter-Liggett Military Reservation 30 miles southwest of King City.
In July of 1771, Father Junipero Serra hung bells on the branches of an oak tree in what is now Monterey County, California. This marked the founding of the third California Mission, Mission San Antonio de Paudua. Over the next 40 years, it grew from small adobe buildings to the community that included the 200x40-foot “Great Church” that stands today.
The mission was abandoned in 1883 and the tiles were removed from the roof. Exposed to weather, the structure fell inot disrepair with only the walls of the church left standing along with the brick facade and the brick arches along the front corridor.
The first reconstruction occurred between 1903 and 1908. Parts of the walls were were rebuilt and covered with a wooden roof. A second reconstruction took place from 1948 to 1952 that left the buildings much as they are today. As of January of 2017 the mission faces closure due to insufficient funds to complete a required seismic retrofit.
