Description
It took rambling conversations with Echo to distract Hera and keep her from discovering Zeus' shenanigans with the nymphs. Today all Echo need do is hand Hera a smart phone.
The sculpture at Olympic Sculpture Park was named for the Greek nymph who was cursed by Hera to only be able to repeat the words of others. The artist chose that name for his close-eyed sculpture to remind us to say our own words, and not simply echo the words of others.
What might the person on her smart phone be reading? The Internet can provide a wealth of information, but are we thinking critically about the content we read, or do we mindlessly spend hours on the web and just echo what we are fed without question?
The Space Needle looks over the nine-acre Olympic Sculpture Park on Seattle's waterfront. The forty-six foot sculpture, Echo, watches in quiet meditation from the harbor towards Mount Olympus. Between them, a woman checks her smart phone.
