Description
Waves of heat rise from the power of 12,000 horses in the GE ES44 locomotives that haul this BNSF train up the Tehachapi Mountains between Bakersfield and Mojave, California. Behind, a string of Cryo-Trans insulated cars keep temperature-sensitive cargo safe from getting too hot or cold as it travels over the deserts and mountains of the United States.
Cryo-Trans began in 1985, when it patented a new kind of refrigerated railcar that used liquid carbon dioxide instead of mechanical refrigeration to keep cargo frozen. These cars remained in use until rising CO2 prices in the late 1990's caused the company to convert them into standard mechanical reefers. The insulated railcar was introduced in 2013 to carry such product as juice, wine, canned foods, and in 2020 the company operated a fleet of 842 such insulated cars.
