On October 5th, 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's was the first to cross the newly opened Outer Drive Bridge crossing the Chicago River on what is now Lake Shore Drive. 36,000 vehicles crossed the bridge in the first hour, and by the end of the day over 100,000 cars had crossed.
The bridge, a double-deck bascule draw bridge, was started in 1929 as a public works project during the Great Depression. Since then it has been known as the Outer Drive Bridge, Link Bridge, and was officially renamed the Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1982 in honor of the late President's 100th birthday.
