Description
5674 had been rolling over BNSFs rails for over 18 years when it passed the Martin Marietta cement plant in Monolith, CA, on this day in 2022.
The General Electric AC4400CW was the first GE locomotive to utilize A/C traction motors instead of the D/C motors which had been in use since the diesel-electric locomotive was invented in 1925. Diesel locomotives don't directly power the drive wheels with the engine like an automobile. The engine turns an electric generator, and that electricity is used to power electric motors on the axles. The switch to A/C made for more powerful motors, while being simpler, more reliable, and easier to maintain.
The GE AC4400CW was introduced in 1994, and the last domestic delivery took place in December of 2004. They were phased out in the United States due to more stringent emission requirements, although deliveries continued in Canada until late 2007. This particular unit was delivered to the BNSF in 2004.
