Description
Far from being a dead end, life closes in on what was once a concrete stretch of US101 over Beaver Creek near Sapho, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula.
The Olympic Loop Highway was completed in 1931 and opened the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington State up to anyone with an automobile. Visitors could now see the majestic Olympic Mountains, spectacular rain forests, the vast Pacific Ocean, and the many rivers, lakes, and wildlife that the peninsula had to offer. Eventually the road was moved to accommodate more modern traffic, leaving this remnant as the forest slowly reclaimed the highway.
Moss grows on the concrete bridge and grasses encroach on the roadbed of the old highway. Unused for decades, this stretch of US101 is now on private property. A walk down the closed road leads to this interesting landmark in the forest.
