Description
This is a closeup photo of the radial engine and propeller on the front of of a World War I biplane. Now hanging in a museum, dust on her propeller lets us know that this aviator has long since retired.
The Nieuport 28C.1 is a French airplane from World War I. Although rejected by the French, it was the first fighter aircraft to serve with an American fighter unit under American command and in support of U.S. troops. After the war they were used by the US military for naval aviation tests, and in private hands they could be seen in movies and modified for aerial racing.
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, located at Washington Dulles Airport just outside Washington DC. The center is large enough to house items that are unable to fit inside the National Air and Space Museum's building on the National Mall in Washington DC.
