Description
CSX was formed in 1980 with the merger of Chessie System (owner of the Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland among others) and Seaboard Coast Line railroads. The merger created the largest railroad east of the Mississippi, and it eventually absorbed 3,800 miles and 42% of rival Conrail' assets in 1997. As of 2020 it is the third largest railroad in the United States.
Once there were hundreds of class 1 railroads - those are the largest of the railroads - in the United States. In 1950 there were over 120 class 1 railroads operating in the United States. When Chessie and Seaboard joined in 1980, that number was down in the 40's. And with Norfolk Southern and CSX splitting up Conrail in 1999, that number was reduced to the current 7 still in existence.
