Description
In 2018 this 1963 Volvo PV544 won its class at the 24 Hours of Lemons Sears Pointless race not through sheer speed, but with the consistency and reliability of the tortoise as it turned lap after lap against the hares, beating such competition as 11 BMWs, 7 Mazda Miatas, 4 Porsches, and 3 Mustangs.
The 24 Hours of LeMons is an endurance race for cars that are bought and prepped for the track for $500 USD or less. Just about anything with four wheels that was street legal when it was made and passes the safety inspection is welcome. The rules do let you spend more for the wheels, brakes, and required safety gear, but if the judges decide the basic car is worth more than $500 you'll be penalized one lap for each $10 they decide you've gone over. No prior racing experience or training is required - if you've got a driver's license and an old beater, you're ready to race.
