Description
Inside of Skull Cave, a lava tube in Lava Beds National Monument in Northern California.
Lava Beds National Monument was established in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge. It covers over 46,000 acres in Northeastern California and has the largest covered by volcano in the Cascade Range. The monument has many lava tubes, ranging from caverns with high ceilings to caves with only a foot or two of clearance for explorers. The tubes were created by lava flows about 30,000 to 40,000 years ago when the top of the hot basaltic lava that flowed downhill cooled and crusted over. The lava below continued to flow until it drained, leaving the tunnels behind.
